Honed, tumbled or brushed: choosing a finish
Tumbled travertine has softened, rounded edges and a slightly textured face that looks aged from day one. It’s forgiving, hides minor wear and gives good grip when wet, which is why it’s so common around Naples pools. Honed travertine is ground flat to a smooth matte finish with crisp edges for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Brushed finishes sit in between, with a gently textured surface that adds traction without the rustic feel of tumbled stone.
Most pool deck travertine is sold “filled,” meaning the natural holes in the stone are filled at the factory, though some pits will open over time, which is normal. Color matters too: ivory and light beige stay coolest and brighten a shaded lanai, while walnut and gold tones hide dirt and leaf stains better. For pool decks we use travertine pavers thick enough to set on a compacted base with a sand bed, which makes future repairs easy.
